For eight years, the Fascist politician Alfredo Obizzi has kept quiet about his affair with Susanna Martellino, the matriarch of the Martellino vineyard. Now in 1938 Italy, Obizzi uses his growing political power to seek revenge on his past enemies, and Susanna and the vineyard’s spiritual sage, Isabella, are at the top of his list. Will faith and forgiveness be enough to lead the vineyard and its inhabitants through the bloodshed and heartbreak of World War II and Obizzi’s vengeance?

Meanwhile, the vineyard’s next generation, DeAngelo and Lily, have been best friends since they were born. But now — is it more? The star-crossed lovers must push through war, distance and outside forces to find out.

"I think this is the first time I've read historical fiction from the point of view of average Italian families. Totally new perspective. Perhaps a little too much religion for my taste (example main character too saintly). But enjoyed it enough to read both this and the 1st book."

Above the Walls edition by Steve Physioc Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • Whatever you do, do not start reading this book at 1130 PM for you will not get any sleep! Knowing my version was scheduled to drop today (Feb 1) I decided to take a peek late last night and there it was! Like magic, "Above the Walls" was waiting for my pleasure. Take my advice, order this book if you haven't already. Download immediately, take the rest of the day off, go home early, forget dinner and jump right into this story.

Steve holds no punches and doesn't slowly slide back into the story. Instead, you are plunged head first right back into the agricultural and political world of 1938 Italy. Hold onto to your seat as you immediately know you are headed for another roller coaster ride directly into the lives of all your old friends (and political scoundrels) from the first novel, "The Walls of Lucca." Your heart is tugged at and nearly ripped from your chest as you know there is no easy way to deal with the obvious and underlying themes of this perfectly written story.

Steve Physioc you have done it again. The most anticipated book of 2019 is a totally satisfying and moving experience. Thank God for Isabella but will faith and forgiveness be enough to lead the vineyard and its inhabitants through the bloodshed and heartbreak of World War II and Obizzi’s vengeance? I don't know, yet, as I finally fell asleep about 500 AM this morning! I may get sick before the afternoon is out and have to go home early to find out how this intriguing story is resolved. And I am just crazy to try the luscious wines from the Martellino vineyards.

Steve Physioc thank you again from the center of my heart. Once again you have made my Beloved Lucca shine. I can hardly wait to return in late August to Lucca and walk the streets once more with friends from "Above the Walls."
  • I agree with another reviewer that the reader should read the first book in the series, "The Walls of Lucca" before reading this one. The first book tells the story of the rise of fascism and this book takes the reader through World War II, the action in Africa, Malta, Sicily and the Italian mainland. It illustrates the "unknown war" that was taking place in Italy where the italian people were torn apart and suffering under first the fascists, then the Nazis and were finally liberated by the Allies whom, I am sure, many considered the enemy while others considered heroes.

It is also a continuation of the story of the Martellino vineyard, Isabela, Franco and the rest of the families whose lives were intertwined and dependent upon the olives and grapes grown on the vineyard. It is a story of friendship, courage, survival and most of all - love. Not just romantic love, though there is plenty of that, but brotherly love and forgiveness. The beliefs embodied in the character Isabella are those of A Course in Miracles which I find beautiful and encouraging during today's tumultuous times and which worked well for the characters in this book.

These are two beautiful books that I recommend about a part of the world that I dearly love and a time in history that we must never forget lest history repeat itself.
  • This book and the first book, The Walls of Lucca, (read them both, in order) make for a fascinating story about the role of Italy in World War I and World War II, and about the rise of Mussolini and fascism in between the wars. It also provides interesting information about the culture of Italy, more specifically, wine- making, olive growing, and cuisine. Last but not least, it illustrates the positive spirituality of A Course in Miracles. One does not have to be a devotee of ACIM to appreciate its message of love. Thus, this book is a historical, cultural, and spiritual novel. It has a few flaws as a work of fiction (e.g., some may find a few of the characters to be one-dimensional), but overall it is a great read. I read the first book in a few weeks. I became so engrossed in the story that I immediately read the second book, in 3 days! Highly recommend.
  • The conclusion of the story of three families on the farm/vineyard of the Martellino land. This book takes us through WWII & it’s immediate aftermath. Each member of the extended clan has their story told & summed up quite satisfactorily. Mr. Physioc does a great job providing us with a nice neat and somewhat surprising conclusion of the family saga. As mentioned in my review of the earlier book “The Walls of Luca” don’t miss this. You WILL find true enjoyment in them both.

  • Like the continuation of the story and family. Setting in Bella Italia in Lucca. History background WW2 and how people lived. Food stories stimulated us to go out for Itanian Food, not as good as Bella the lead character would make. Love emphasis on Forgiveness. Highly recommend it. By coincidence just finished Tuscan Child also time frame and near Lucca. We are inspired to visit Lucca.
  • Above the Walls shows Steve Physioc’s increasing depth and rapid development as an author of historical fiction. A visceral page-turner that brings the political complexities and ambiguities of WWII Italy into sharp focus. The suspense and series of surprises as the book concludes are a delizioso payoff to a heartfelt and spiritually enlightened pair of novels.
  • I think this is the first time I've read historical fiction from the point of view of average Italian families. Totally new perspective. Perhaps a little too much religion for my taste (example main character too saintly). But enjoyed it enough to read both this and the 1st book.
  • 'Above the Walls' is a captivating, and inspirational continuation of book 1 'The Walls of Lucca'. I found myself caring deeply about the Martellino family and friends, shaken by the horrors of war, but hopeful that the resolute power of the human spirit would triumph over this evil. I learned so much about WWII, and how it affected the lives of millions of people all over Europe, and America. I recommend 'Above the Walls' to readers young and old, this book has renewed my faith in historical fiction. I was so sad to finish reading this book. I can't wait to read what author Steve Physioc writes next!
