From Page to Stage Inspiration Tools and Public Speaking Tips for Writers Betsy Graziani Fasbinder 9781631524639 Books Reviews

  • In today’s publishing environment, authors of all types must speak up for their works. The written word isn't enough - you've got to talk to people. Doing so isn't as daunting when you have this book. Fasbinder offers practical advice for being a more effective speaker in variety of situations. While there are plenty of other books on public speaking, this one focuses on the needs of writers, making it particularly valuable. I will rely on this guide.
  • On a recent book tour event, several co-panelists arrived with a single sheet of notes for their talks that bore great similarity to the one I’d brought. We had very different books to speak about, but we’d all found and used Betsy Graziani Fasbinder’s treasure of a resource, From Page to Stage, to help us prepare our talks. I was no stranger to public speaking, nor particularly stressed by it. Nonetheless, I found the exercises, the frequent references to wonderful TED talks, and most especially the “story map” a concise and helpful compendium of known and new techniques tailor-made for author speakers, (but useful for anyone needing to speak in public.) Add Fasbinder’s wit, empathy, straightforward writing style, and “cred” as an award-winning author of fiction and memoir, and this book is a true treasure.
  • This is the holy grail of public speaking. I’ve read and tried lots of “how-to”s on this subject (I’m a member of Toastmasters), and “From Page to Stage” is by far the best. The “story map” is pure genius. It writes the speech for you! The book is so enjoyably readable—lots of stories and real life examples. I use the methods in it for both prepared and extemporaneous speaking.

You’ll laugh when you read how practical these tips are; the author successfully used them to convince her husband they needed to take a European vacation! Betsy Graziani Fasbinder coaches Fortune 500 companies, but she speaks to everyone, at any level, in their quest to become calm, fearless, interesting public speakers.
  • I heard about this book through my publisher, She Write Press, which is also the publisher of FROM PAGE TO STAGE. Even though I’m no stranger to public speaking, I wanted some new ideas on how to “wow” audiences as I started talking about my own, recently-published book. Betsy Graziani Fasbinder’s book provided countless useful tips, and I especially appreciated the structure map she provides, which makes it easy and fun to construct a talk. I just gave my first one and was so pleased with how effortlessly it flowed and how natural it felt. And the response from my audience was extremely positive. This book is going to be my companion and guide as I promote my book and continue to expand my public speaking opportunities.
  • This is a wonderful book full of practical tools and compassionate advice for even the most introverted of those among us. Fasbinder, a self-proclaimed glossophobe, speaks to strategies she has both utilized and taught to improve performance and decrease anxiety. Written specifically for authors, she shares inspirational quotes and “Mental Shifts” to help authors think differently about public speaking – and even make it fun!
  • From Page to Stage offers many practical tips for writers---actually, for anyone embarking on a public speaking adventure. It is realistic yet encouraging and comforting.
  • I am a writer with no background in public speaking about to launch my book baby into the world and feel incredibly lucky to have discovered From Page to Stage, specifically Betsy Graziani Fasbinder, who’s written an intelligent and well organized book, with good humor and warmth—a roadmap to the why not, the why not you, the how do you put together a talk on any kind of topic. I’ve read the book from end to end and completed several of the exercises and, with her guidance in mind, have been watching other speakers closely. Next on the agenda for me is tackling the author’s Story Map, the centerpiece of Graziani’s advice. I’m in capable hands and loving this book.
  • My novel Wild Boar in the Cane Field will be published in September 2019 and already I have had an opportunity to talk about my novel. I realize that as the time gets closer, I will need to follow some structure in promoting the novel. I have read a few chapters already and know that as I get closer, the resources will be invaluable. In particular, I appreciate the exercises at the end of the text.
